  4. Reading Workshop Vision/Goal • To develop strategic readers who are knowledgeable about the reading process • To improve student’s reading skills in comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and content area reading • To develop an interest in reading for lifelong enjoyment.

  8. HOMEWORK (MINIMAL) • READ for 10-15 minutes (newspaper, magazines, articles, short stories, advice columns, sports columns) • Watch the NEWS (World & Local) (Current events foster connections for both reading and writing and supports content area learning)

Statistics • Research has shown that past the 4th grade, the number of words a person knows depends primarily on how much time they spend reading (Hayes & Ahrens, 1988; Nagy & Anderson, 1984; Nagy & Herman, 1987; Stanovich, 1986).  • By the time they reach adulthood, people who make a habit of reading have a vocabulary that is about four times the size of those who rarely or never read.  • The educational careers of 25 to 40 percent of American children are imperiled because they don't read well enough, quickly enough, or easily enough.  • Over 50% of NASA employees are dyslexic. They are deliberately sought after because they have superb problem solving skills and excellent 3D and spatial awareness.
