  2. Question # 1 What is Santa Claus called in Madagascar?

  3. Traditions or Celebrations • In Madagascar, Santa Claus is called “Dadabe Noely”. • Christmas in Madagascar is not just two days like my family here in Canada. It can be celebrated over a couple of months. • People go to church on Christmas Eve for a long time. Some stay at church until midnight! After the service, the church gives out sweets or biscuits to the people who came.

Traditions or Celebrations • Most people in Madagascar celebrate Christmas, they celebrate the birth of Jesus. • Even strangers, on Christmas Day greet each other by saying 'Arahaba tratry ny Noely' which means 'Merry Christmas' • For Christmas, people from Madagascar eat chicken or pork with a special cake • My family likes to buy poinsettias at Christmas time and in Madagascar, they grow and flower all year round

  5. Special Christmas Food • Lychees, are special food eaten at Christmas time. They are bought from people who sell them on the streets, when they are fresh from the trees. They even cover the streets in lychee skins!

  6. “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” in Malagasy is “Mirary Krismasy sambatra sy Taona vaovao tonga lafatra ho anao”

  7. Question # 2 What is often the traditional Christmas meal in Japan?

  8. Traditions or Celebrations • The Traditional Food in Japan is fried chicken. yum!! Japan even has KFC! • People in Japan celebrate Christmas at the same time as my family on December 24th and 25th. • They do not celebrate Christmas like us or Madagascar though, they do not celebrate the birth of Jesus, but they celebrate it to spread happiness.

  9. Traditions or Celebrations • People in Japan throw Christmas parties and they decorate their Christmas cakes with trees, flowers and figures of Santa Claus.

  10. There is no Japanese word for “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” they say “Merii Kurisumasu”
