  1. Exploratory Synthesis of Silver Iron(III) VanadatesShiou-Jyh Hwu, Clemson University, DMR 0706426 • The structural features and electrochemical properties of a new series of silver iron(III) vanadates relevant to applications as cathode materials for primary lithium battery devices have been studied. • Silver vanadium oxide, Ag2V4O11 (SVO), has been known for its superior electrochemical properties in a primary lithium battery configuration and has been used extensively in implantable medical devices. The theoretical capacity of SVO is 315 mAh/g, however < 15% (47 mAh/g) is above the 3 V corresponding to Ag+/Ag0. • New phases discovered in the pseudo-ternary, Ag2OFe2O3V2O5, system show extended capacities because of the combined reduction of Ag+/Ag0 and Fe3+/Fe2+. 2. Undergraduate Research Experience in Energy Shiou-Jyh Hwu, Clemson University, DMR 0706426 Introducing inorganic solids state chemistry to the undergraduate through EUREKA! (Experiences in Undergraduate Research Exploration and Knowledge Advancement) honors program at Clemson University. Two of the four Summer Undergraduate research program participants, Caitlin Knight (freshman, in lab coat) and Mira Narayan (junior), working in the PI’s research laboratory. Graduate Students:Duminda Sanjeewa (Ph.D. 2012), J. Palmer West (Ph.D. 2011), Matt Williams (Ph.D. 2010) Collaborator: Dr. John Vaughey, Argonne National Laboratory
