  4. Just the Facts Please… • Verify and establish the facts • Determine your agency’s role and activities • Ex. Soil sampling, air monitoring, etc… • Craft a desk statement to capture this information

  5. Next Steps • Start developing a list of FAQs • Work w/ partners to coordinate answers for the media and public • Recommended actions, instructions, hotline numbers, etc… • Identify subject matter expert for the event • Develop a communications plan (if time permits)

  7. Data Coordination is key PIOs constantly track data availability PIOs coordinate with scientists and management to determine messaging language No data posted without an explanation Data is released to the public and media via web, press release, social media, etc.

  8. Ten Reasons to Release Information 1.People are Entitled to Information that affects their lives. 2 Early release of information sets the pace for resolution of the problem. 3.If you wait the story may leak anyway. When it does, you are apt to lose trust and credibility.
