  2. 8.4 Why Has Terrorism Increased? Deaton: APHG

  3. Terrorism • Terrorism is an act by a group or single person to frighten another. • It operates outside of governments and states. • It can be difficult to distinguish from acts of political violence. Why? • It is aimed at ordinary people rather than military targets or political leaders. • It’s main purpose is to change everyday life and create fear in it. • Most terrorist are very willing to die in the process

  4. American Terrorists • Prior to 9/11: • Pan Am flight 103 on 12/21/88 • World Trade Center garage car bomb 2/26/93 • Oklahoma City Federal Building • Ted K. the unabomber through a 17 year period • Why did these not have as large of an impact in our daily lives as 9/11.

  5. September 11th, 2001 • How did we get to this event? • Al-Qaeda- the U.S. government had sponsored this rebel group to resist Soviet influence. • By 1989 the threat of the Soviets had decreased and we left and turned our attentions elsewhere leaving AQ to fend for itself. • After being rejected out of several states this group declared war on the U.S. in 1996.

  6. September 11th, 2001 • AQ stands for “the foundation” and has had a membership of 20,000 dispersed in close to 34 countries. • They assume regular jobs and appear as ordinary citizens operating secretly and planning guerilla attacks at different times. • The most famous of course being on 9/11/2001 and causing the most damage.

  7. September 11th, 2001 • Results: four planes, 3,000 fatalities, wars with three countries/states, and change in everyday life (Patriot Act). • U.S. has taken military action against Afghanistan, Iraq (Iran), and Pakistan. Why? • Was this act of terrorism successful? How?
