  2. unremittingly • Adverb • In a continuing, persisting, or recurring way • My head pounded unremittingly, and it seemed I couldn’t get any relief from the pain.

  3. Cynical • Adjective • Doubting or contemptuous of human nature or of the motives, goodness, or sincerity of others • The grumpy, cynical man couldn’t believe his neighbor brought him cookies “just to be nice.”

  4. emigrate • Verb • To leave a place, especially a native country, to go and live in another country • It must be traumatic for those who emigrate to a new country because often the new culture is very different from what they previously knew.

  5. reprieve • Noun • A temporary relief from something harmful, especially danger or pain • The woman giving birth was grateful for the few minutes of reprieve from contractions so she could rest.

  6. countenance • Noun • Somebody’s face or the expression on it • Nolan could tell from his mother’s countenance that she did not find his comment to be humorous.

  10. robust • Adjective • Strong, healthy, and hardy in constitution • The robust spring flowers survived the late frost without any sign of wilting.

  11. vulnerable • Adjective • Open to emotional or physical danger or harm • The mother robin swooped down over her vulnerable baby after it fell out of the nest.
