  1. National Engineers Week Future City Competition Judge’s Orientation Workshop January 21, 2010

Mission The mission of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition is to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program for seventh and eighth grade students that combines a stimulating engineering challenge with a “hands-on” application to present their vision of a city of the future.

  3. Mission (cont.) This will be accomplished by: • Fostering engineering skills, such as teamwork, communications, and problem solving • Providing interaction among students, teachers, and engineer mentors • Informing the community about the multi-disciplines within the engineering profession • Inspiring students to explore futuristic concepts and careers in engineering

  4. History • 18th year of the Competition in U.S. • 12th year in Washington State • First three years hosted in Eastern Washington • Last nine years hosted in Seattle • Product of National Engineers Week • Hosted in Seattle by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

  10. Phase IDesign City (SimCity) • One copy of SimCity provided to each school • Run simulation until year 2150 • Build population to at least 50,000 • City design scored on: • City layout • Energy • Transportation • Recreation

  11. Phase IIBuild the Model • Scale model of section of Future City • 25” wide x 50” long x 20” high • Self contained (no external power) • At least one moving part • Recycled materials • Cost not to exceed $100

Phase IIIEssay / Abstract • 300 – 500 word narrative describing your Future City • 500 – 700 word essay addressing a given engineering topic Example essay topics: • How can plastics be used to help senior citizens in the future? • Develop an energy strategy to include fuel cell systems to power a city of the future.

  13. Phase IVTeam Presentation • 5 – 7 minute presentation • 3 students give the presentation as a team • No laptops, overhead projectors or videos • Judges will ask questions after presentation • Flip charts / poster board are OK

  20. Regional Competition Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Seattle Center • Morning “run-off competition” • Up to 5 teams from each school may compete • Afternoon “regional competition” • 5 finalist teams from the morning competition • Only one finalist team from any individual school

  26. Morning Preliminary Judges • Arrive by 7:30am • Bring clipboard, pen & small calculator • Pick up your packet • Meet other judges on your team • Have a cup of coffee • First round judging starts at 8:30am

  27. Afternoon Finalist Judges • Arrive by 11:30 am • Meet and have lunch with other finalist judges • Finalist model judging 1:00pm – 1:30pm • Finalist presentation judging 1:30pm – 3:10pm

  29. Morning Format • Large room (San Juan Suite) • 1 table for each Future City Team (19 teams) • (8) 15 minutes time slots with 10 minutes in between • Times will be announced over loudspeaker • Future City models / teams stay in place, judging teams move from table to table

  30. Morning Format • 3 judges on each judging team • Each judging team will score 4 to 5 presentations during the morning • Mark a penalty if presentation over 7 minutes • Don’t worry about other penalties – special judge will measure models and presentation materials

Afternoon Format • Olympic Room • Order of presentations determined at random • Presentations on stage in front of audience • 5 judges at a table facing the presentation • Presentation timing by a committee member • Hold score sheets until the end, meet after the presentations to finalize scoring

Questions for Students • Judging team to ask at least three questions to each Future City team (including two mandatory questions) • Ask age appropriate questions (7th & 8th grade) • Sample questions in Judge’s Manual • Direct all comments in a positive manner • Give equal time to each team (full 15 minutes)

  33. Mandatory Questions • Mandatory questions are in your packet • 2 mandatory questions for the students’ first morning presentation • Second set of 2 mandatory questions for the students’ second morning presentation • Third set of 2 mandatory questions for the afternoon finalists

  34. Score Sheets 2 score sheets per judge per presentation • City Model (0-120 points) • Team Presentation (0-90 points)

  35. Score Sheets • 19 teams • 2 presentations per team • 3 judges per presentation • 2 score sheets per judge per presentation LOTs of PAPER

  36. Score Sheets • Include your Judge’s ID Number (ex: J25) • Include Future City Team Number (ex: 07B)

  39. Score Sheets • Turn in score sheets to scoring table in judges room or give to a committee member • Turn in score sheets when completed, don’t hold them to the end

  40. Lunch / Breaks • Coffee and snacks in committee /judge’s room • Lunch provided, submit sandwich orders in advance • Use time between presentations to fill out score sheets and view/judge models
