The NHS Centre for Involvement Response to an European-wide Tender Successful Consortium University of Warwick Long Term Conditions Alliance Centre for Public Scrutiny The Centre announced in May 2006 by the Health Minister Start of set-up phase from June 2006 Formal launch November 2006 Funded for three years until 31st August 2009

Promote the value of patient and public involvement • Create a one stop shop for information and advice • Build the capacity of organisations, staff and patient-citizens • Develop and disseminate practical resources • Generate evidence-based models and best practice examples • Identify and maximise learning opportunities • Develop networks and communities of interest • Practice what we preach The aims of the Centre

  5. Organisation Development • Research and Learning comprising two strands: • Evidence and Best Practice • Learning and Support • The People Bank • Patient-Citizen Exchange (PCX) • Patient and Public Involvement Exchange (PPIX) • Communications – underpins everything Organising our work

  6. Specific Focus on Learning and Support Projects • We aim to analyse the gaps between demand of learning and supply of learning in order to determine evidence-based priorities.

  7. Current and Future Learning and Support Strand • Cluster One (Demand) • Differentiating core PPI competence requirements → • Learning requirements of the existing • workforce • Learning from the OD and Research • strands • Learning for the future workforce • Development of a PPI career • framework • Cluster Two (Supply) • Mapping and analysis of learning • resources for staff, patients/carers • and for PCX • Mapping of providers of PPI • learning

  8. Cluster One Exploring existing frameworks to extract PPI competencies → identification of demands within the existing workforce

  9. OD projects: • Work across different types of Trusts across England. • Provide baseline assessments of PPI. • Focus on a specific area to model good practice. • Learning and recommendations inform the demand for PPI education and support. Evidence and Best Practice strand e.g.: • Annual census on the state of PPI. • A survey of the learning needs for Patient-Citizens. Learning from the Organisation Development Projects and Evidence and Best Practice Strand

Aspire to support providers of health and social care education to ensure that diplomates and graduates meet the core PPI competencies at the point of registration/qualification • To work with partners across the sector to influence curricula for qualifications at levels 1 - 4 Learning for the Future Workforce

  11. Linkages to the NHS Career Framework • Looking at the full scope of activity and competence from level 1 to level 9 • Will be a growth area • Needs to be planned and sustainable PPI Career Framework

Cluster Two Mapping and analysis of learning resources for staff, patients/carers and for PCX – the Centre is not an education provider although we do undertake some specific education projects Mapping of providers of PPI learning – we aspire to be a one stop shop for information and resources about PPI
