Background • Using Information and Curriculum Technology in UK schools • “used well (digital technologies) have the potential to improve achievement …. and to significantly enhance our quality of life” • Tony Blair - Prime Minister UK - 2001 • All teachers trained after 1998 have to pass competency in ICT • Between 1999 and 2003 all practising teachers to reach the same standard • Massive funding of over £2 billion (3,000,000,000 Euros) in funding for hardware in UK schools in last 5 years and £500 million (7.5 million Euros) for a ‘digital curriulum’ over next 3 years.

Summary • ICT should be used when it can: • (i) Do something that could not previously be done • (ii) Do something more effectively or efficiently • Identify the skills you and the pupils need to use the ICT • Plan carefully (Objectives, Assessment, Outcomes) • Using ICT changes teaching styles and expectations • You are still a teacher of RE ! If the ICT does not enhance the RE do not use it!
