  1. Unit 3: Physics 8.6A Demonstrate and Calculate how unbalanced forces change the speed or direction of an object

  2. Force: a push or pull • Watch the video clip and be able to answer the following questions: • What force is acting upon him? • Is that force pushing him or pulling him? • The radio person tells him that he is slowing down. How can that be? What would slow him down? Edge of Space Jump

  3. Newton’s Laws of Motion • All of the laws explain why things move and use math to explain why • Motion of any object depends on the size and direction of all forces that are pushing or pulling the object • Forces are measured in Newtons (N)

  4. Balanced Forces Prior Knowledge Question: How do you know when a chemical equation is balanced? Answer: The amount of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation are equal; the forces need to cancel each other out

  5. Balanced Forces Predict: Question: If each arrow is an amount of force, how would we be able to tell if the forces were balanced? Answer: Both sides would be the same number

  6. Unbalanced forces If anything is moving, no matter how small a distance, the forces are unbalanced. The object will move in the direction of the greater force • Example: Football If a GMS football player and a NFL football player tried to tackle one another, who would be able to move who? The NFL player applies the greater force. Therefore, the GMS player would move in the direction he was pushed.

  7. Are the forces balanced or unbalanced? 8 N 15 N 4 N 4 N

  8. Which direction will the object move? 6 N 6 N 10 N 9 N

  9. Speed: the distance an object travels over a period of time Math Formula: Speed = distance time Fractions mean division If you know 2 of these, you can solve for the third!

  10. Different Types of Speed • Constant Speed: the speed at any given moment is the same • Instantaneous Speed: the speed an object is traveling at any specific moment • Average Speed: total distance divided by the time it takes to get there; speeds might change
