What is Self-Monitoring Comprehension? • Readers are able to understand what they are reading, and notice what they do not understand • Help students become conscious of their own thinking and teaching them what to do about when they are confused. • If they don’t understand, they need to know different strategies to help them make sense of what they are reading

  3. How to Repair Comprehension? First stop and ask these questions: • Does this make sense? • Do I know what all the words mean? • Can I picture in my mind what is happening? • What do I think will happen next? • Was my prediction correct? Why or why not?

  4. How to Repair Comprehension? When students continue to have problems understanding,teach them the fix-up strategy: • Reread the sentence or paragraph to help me figure out what a word means or what the author is saying (context clues) • Read ahead the next sentence or two to see if it helps me understand • Retell in my own words what I just read

  5. How to Repair Comprehension? • Think and connect what I read to what I already know and my own experiences • Use the dictionary, computer, and etc. to define unfamiliar words. • If students are still having trouble understanding, they should ask someone for help.
