  3. Consequences of not addressing this concern? Lack of accurate and timely information limits: • Making evidence-based policy decisions • Focusing on the right priorities • Efficient allocation of resources • Monitoring progress • Detection and response to health emergencies

  4. Regional actions • Build effective training programs for all levels • Data management, surveillance, epidemiology • Harmonize, develop standards • Learn from successes and failures • Strengthen regional surveillance & response • APSED/IHR • STEPS surveys • Civil registration

What is best done at national level • Strengthen human resource capacity, including developing core data competencies at all levels • Advocate for improved civil & vital registration systems • Select appropriate solutions based on information needs and country capacity • Improve quality & use of existing data • Strengthen surveillance & response • Ensure privacy and confidentiality

  6. What should development partners do? • Utilize and strengthen existing health information (also donor harmonisation) • Empower countries to better use their own data • Build effective data management and field epidemiology training programs • Improve communications between countries (IHR, health statistics)

  7. Better utilize existing data and resources • In-country statistics offices and surveillance systems • Regional networks (e.g. PPHSN, PHIN, PIHOA) • Regional surveillance systems (e.g. Syndromic Surveillance, Laboratory networks)

  8. Recommended Actions for Ministers Create a culture of information: • Demand better quality information and evidence for policy decisions • Advocate for improved civil and vital registration systems • Select the most appropriate solution to get the required information • Support strengthening of human resources
