  3. Click to select a folder to hold the Census Return and Report files. 3

  4. It is very important to select a folder that is available to all users who will be involved with the Return, … but that folder must be secure as it will hold children’s details. 4

  5. IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the sensitive nature of some of the data stored in SIMS .net, careful consideration should be given when specifying the location of any folder into which you save sensitive data, e.g. census returns, imported and exported CTFs, etc. You should be mindful of your school's responsibilities with respect to information security. Consider which users have access to the chosen folder, especially if the folder is shared on a Server. The DfE recommends ISO27001 as the standard for information security, a copy of which can be found at http://www.itgovernance.co.uk/bs7799.aspx. If you are in any doubt, you should consult with your IT Security Officer before proceeding. 5

  6. If you are sure you have selected a suitable folder you click Yes 6

  7. New to the Autumn Census Security Message Defined by the user and printed at the top of all reports 7

  8. You can add to or replace the security message that will be printed at the top of each report 8

  10. Click to search for records that have already been created 10

  11. Click to add a New School Census Return. 11

  12. You should enter a unique name to identify this version of your Return 12

  13. It a good idea to save the file with this revised description. 13

  14. All relevant dates are displayed, but none of these dates can be changed as that would not be in line with the DfE specification 14

  15. Click to move to the School Information panel 15

  16. Click if any of the school details need to be edited 16

  17. Don’t forget to save any changes you make. 17

  18. New to the Autumn Census Calculate all Details Now checks for missing marks and gives a warning if any are found 18

  19. Calculate all Details will calculate the information as necessary for all of the remaining panels. Attendance information will be checked for use of official DfE codes and missing marks. 19

  20. There is a lot of Attendance information to interrogate so only proceed if you have sufficient time. 20

  21. New to the Autumn Census Hours at Setting Support for two year olds as well as three and four year olds 21

  22. We can click to jump to the screen where the hours at setting information can be updated. 22

  23. Click to move to the Attendance panel 23

  24. Attendance information exists and the attendance codes are DfE compliant, so no manual entry of attendance information is required. 24

  25. Click to move to the Previous Summer Census panel 25

  26. New to the Autumn Census Previous Summer Census Report added to allow the user to compare the Learning Aims information sent in the Summer Return with the information to be sent in this Autumn Return 26

  27. Click to open the relevant authorised Summer Return 27

  28. If you sent more than one Return to the DfE then select the last Return that was sent. 28

  29. Click to make use of the selected Return file. 29

  30. Click to run the comparison report 30

  32. Click to tick each record you want to indicate as sent in error. 32

  33. Don’t forget to save your changes. 33

  34. Click to create the XML Return file and to run DfE validation across the file. 34
