  1. SAE Basics Your quick guide to theStandards Assessment Exam Concept

What is an SAE? • A continuing education module with: • Questions created by subject matter experts • Resources to help you answer the questions • Online answer submission within 150 days of ordering • In-depth feedback on the correct answer • NAPNAP accredited contact hours upon passing • CPN module: 15 contact hours each • CPNP modules: 7.5 contact hours each • SAEs are self-paced and can be completed at home and at your leisure within 150 days.

What does a module include? • Questions written by your peers • CPNPs: 35 – 45 questions per SAE • CPNs: 70 – 75 questions per SAE • Online answer submission • Website link, unique user ID, and password • Resources for answering the questions • Resources vary by SAE type. See the next slide for details.

Resources Vary by SAE Type: • CPNs have the option of printed articles or online PDF articles for a majority of references. • CPNPs have exclusively online modules with some print options: • Primary Care: PDF articles* and links • Acute Care: A bibliography of articles* and texts • Pharm: Some PDF articles* and links plus text references *Where possible, we’re developing optional printed article packets for these SAEs at an additional cost.

  5. Why “exam”? • To offer accredited contact hours, SAEs must be graded. • 70% or more = passing • The overwhelming majority of SAE participants pass. • TIP: Think of SAEs like an open book quiz. If you read the materials, you should be able to answer the questions correctly.

  6. Is it required? • Yes. You decide when in your 7-year Recert tracking cycle to complete required SAEs. • CPNs • One 15-contact-hour SAE during each 7-year cycle • Primary Care CPNPs • 45 contact hours’ worth of SAE modules per 7-year cycle • Acute Care CPNPs • 45 contact hours’ worth of SAE modules per 7-year cycle • Dual Primary Care & Acute Care CPNPs • 60 contact hours’ worth of SAE modules per 7-year cycle CPNPs: Log in to My Recert History for a contact hour breakdown of category types required.

  7. Your SAE Progress Guide • Developed for 2012 Recert and beyond • Log in to your account at www.pncb.org • At lower left of your account screen, look for a visual guide showing your progress to completing SAE requirements for your 7-year cycle. Green shows completed contact hours’ worth of your SAE requirements

  8. Can I collaborate? Yes. • If you have colleagues taking the same SAE, feel free to organize discussion groups. Dialogue with peers can enhance your learning experience.

  9. Do I have to buy Pharm & AC supporting references? (Only applies to CPNPs) It’s up to you. • For the CPNP Pharm SAEs, Lexi-Comp’s Pediatric Dosage Handbook and the AAP Red Book are resources for many of the questions. These are not included but can be purchased from the publishers at a special PNCB discount, if you want to buy them. • For CPNP Acute Care SAEs, consider using your hospital library.

  10. What if I don’t pass? • You get a free retest. • The overwhelming majority of SAE participants pass. • TIP: Use your initial SAE feedback to assist you in answering the retest.

  11. Other popular questions: • Can I repeat an SAE? • Yes, as long as it’s a new edition. • When should I take an SAE? • You decide when as you’re planning your 7-year Recert tracking cycle. Starting with 2013 Recert (Oct. 1 – Dec. 31, 2012), SAEs must be completed prior to Recert enrollment to be counted. • Is answering online user-friendly? • Yes, and we offer a tip sheet for using the testing site.

  12. More questions: • What if I don’t have Internet access? • Ask your employer to support your certification by allowing you to use one at work. Friends and family may be able to help, plus public libraries. • When can I see if I passed? • The online testing website offers pass/fail status when you click to submit your answers for final grading. • Can I grade questions as I move through the SAE? • Yes, and some people prefer to see immediate feedback. Whether you grade question by question or all at once is your decision.
