  2. Being SpiritualReview Understanding what it means to be spiritual is foundational for preparation for spiritual warfare

  3. View of Isthmus from Acrocorinth Corinth: One of the richest, powerful, & most immoral cities of Roman Greece

  4. Acts 18:1 – From Athens to Corinth Paul taught in Corinth for 1 ½ years

  5. Being SpiritualReview Paul’s letter a strong rebuke & correction for their pride, immaturity & doctrinal errors 1 Corinthians 12-14 is all one section correcting one overall subject The issue was not spiritual gifts (charisma), but spiritual things – being spiritual (pneumatikos) They had all spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 1:7), but did not use them in a spiritual manner

  6. Being SpiritualReview Their pagan practices sought the experience of ecstasy, a feeling of oneness with the god or goddess Those in ecstasy were known to shake, fall down & babble in ecstatic speech Some who were supposedly under the control of the Holy Spirit were instead blaspheming Christ

  7. Being SpiritualReview Every spiritual gift, ministry & ability are given by God as He wills for the common good of the body Any gift is a manifestation of the Spirit & the fruit of the Spirit His control The specific list of gifts in 1 Cor. 12:8-10 were the “showy” ones that appealed to their carnality.

  8. The Body Analogy1 Corinthians 12:12 A physical body is made up of many parts, but is only one body. The Church one entity, yet is made of up many different people with different gifts, ministries & abilities

  9. Entrance into the Body 1 Corinthians 12:13 The Spirit baptizes every believer into the body & then indwells from then on. Pentecostal theology teaches you are saved first, and then baptized by the Holy Spirit at a later time are Pentecostal theology directly contradicts 1 Corinthians 12:11, 13, 30 and Roman 8:9

  10. The Diverse Members of the One Body 1 Corinthians 12:14-20 Every part is needed in order for the physical body to function properly, so also everyone in the church. Every gift, ministry & ability is needed for it to be whole & functioning properly God that places every person in the body as He desires - a rebuke to the proud & selfish Corinthians

  11. The Need & Unity of Every Member 1 Corinthians 12:21-27 If a body loses a part, the body will be handicapped and the cut off portion will shrivel & die Visible things are often not as important as the unseen ones You can live without hair, an arm or leg, but you cannot live without a heart, lungs, kidneys or liver

  12. The Need & Unity of Every Member 1 Corinthians 12:21-27 A church can still function, though hindered, without some of the most visible gifts / ministries A church will die without faithful people praying, evangelizing, discipling and caring for one another “Seemly” (comely) refers to what is beautiful and is displayed.

  13. The Need & Unity of Every Member 1 Corinthians 12:21-27 Humility & proper respect given to every part of the body promotes unity What I do & you do individually will affect the rest of the body causing either suffering or honor Romans 12 & Ephesians 4 also use the body analogy to describe our responsibilities to one another

  14. Diversity in the Body 1 Corinthians 12:28-30 All of gifts, ministries & abilities are needed. There is no room for pride in the body. It is God that appoints each of us to the place He wants us to serve Him There is no gift that everyone has, and no one has every gift

  15. Diversity in the Body 1 Corinthians 12:28-30 The list of particular gifts in verse 28 is not the same as in verses 8-10. There is no comprehensive list This list is given in relative order of importance Various kinds of tongues is last in the list

  16. Conclusions Every Christian is equipped by God to serve Him, to fail to do so leaves the body handicapped at best. Paul’s transition to chapter 13 is show there is a superior mark of being truly spiritual – being loving
