  2. The Publishing Industry is currently undergoing the biggest evolution since the invention of the printing press • The Internet & advances in desktop publishing software now means that ANYONE can be a small press/ online publisher

  3. “During the past 20 years, the landscape of the book publishing industry has been slowly shifting. Traditional publishing houses continue to be assimilated into massive, multi-national media conglomerates, making it more and more difficult for unknown authors to be published. Meanwhile, a new breed of smaller, technology-based publishing companies have been doing exactly the opposite.” (Harnish, 2005).

  4. But print is not dead! Lovers of hardcopy literature still exist (believe it or not). As the well documented trend Fragmentation – the division of audiences into small groups due to the wide spectrum of media outlets (Barron’s Marketing Dictionary, 2012) – details, there is space for an unbelievable number of different publications. • “Ebooks are the malady of modern day technology. There is no competition for paper books. The smell an feel of old paper is unbeatable.” (MouthShut, 2010).

  5. ZINES!!!!

  6. ZINES!! • Just for those that don’t know – Zines are “some sort of publication, usually mass-produced by photocopying (in some cases, scanned, put on the 'net, or copied via fax)on any range of topics, but usally filled with passion. a means of telling one's story, sharing thoughts, and/or artwork/comics/doodles.Often a crudely-made magazine often dedicated to the thoughts and musings of its creator, and sometimes devoted to a particular art form or celebrity.” (Urban Dictionary, 2012).

  7. ZINES!!! • Why they are awesome; • Unpolished feel • Content is often entertaining, weird and a little crazy • Unique mixing of mediums, including written (political essays, prose, poems, reviews, controversial articles and everything in between) & unconventional visual art (comics, doodles, etc). • Often handwritten & freaking hilarious!

  8. Zines!!! • Whilst often resistant to mainstream marketing & ‘availability’, the following are some umbrella sites where you can purchase them, otherwise they are available at Zine fairs or specialist book stores. • http://www.stickyinstitute.com/ • http://smellslikezines.com/
