  4. Italian Language Experience Kensington Parkwood

  5. From a simple beginning… • Schools in the Walter Johnson cluster of Montgomery County were asked to support an Italian Language Initiative • Kensington Parkwood began by offering after school Italian classes to students in 2001

  6. Italian Culture and Language Fellowships • In the Spring of 2004, John Ceschini, principal of Kensington Parkwood was awarded one of six fellowships and traveled to Milan & Naples, Italy

  7. During this life changing experience, connections were made with two schools in Italy • Collegio San Carlo, Milan, Italy • Scuola Media, Castellamare Di Stabia

  8. A partnership between the schools was formed with teacher exchanges each year

  9. Kindergarten students welcomed their visitors 3rd graders heard a story written by their Italian peers

  10. From this was born IATE: Partnership in the Arts • Maryland State Dept. of Education • Collegio San Carlo • George Mason University • Italian Cultural Society • Kensington Parkwood Elementary School

Objectives of IATE • Experience the integration of art and language through a multi-sensory approach to learning • Make connections between your own expressive modes and those of your students • Learn by working with Italian artist to develop the “artist within yourself” • Participants will see, think, and dream through their experiences

  12. IATE 2006 Culture of Milano Through Taste, Smell, & Experience

  13. Collegio San Carlo was the Milan host for IATE and opened their doors to the participants • Provided lectures and tours on Milan • Hosted students’ performances • Arranged meetings with officials of Milano city Council; Consulate Representative of United States; IRRE Lombardia; and Foreign Languages Inspector

Examples of Learning Experiences Workshop with Sante Pizzol Observe master artists create stained glass & create individual pieces of stained glass Visit to Premiere Marionette Workshop Since1699 art form has been used to help audiences to see, think & dream La Scala Learned how music, dance, movement, singing are not only art to be staged but an important part of daily life

  15. Participants visited the Ambrosiana Art Gallery • Participants experienced guided tours of the gallery finding relationships between masterpieces • Developed opportunities to transfer experience to students • Examined work including DaVinci & Caravaggio’s Basket of Fruit

  16. Making Connections Through the Arts: Example of Museum Application Back at School • Students were asked to examine two works of Italian art. • After taking the time to closely examine each print; students were asked to complete “What do you see?”

  17. During the 2006 Summer, an additional staff member was awarded an Italian Culture & Language Fellowship This fellowship focused on cultural and life of Rome & Turin

  18. Back at KP, the new school year brought an expanded Italian Language Model • 3rd graders began working one day per week with an Italian language teacher integrating Social Studies

  19. 4th graders built upon their understanding from the past year by integrating the study of fables through both Italian and English

  20. Before school classes in Italian are being offered to both students and adults.

During the Spring of 2007, IATE will take place in Napoli • Developed with support of IATE 2006 founding members and from “Restoring Ancient Stabiae Foundation” • A non-profit entity in Italy with members from the Archeological Superintendency of Pompei and the School of Architecture of the University of Maryland.

IATE at Castellammare 2007 An Immersion in Ancient Roman Times • Examples of site visits: • To Stabiae archeological ruinsTo Pompei archeological ruins • To Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum • To the National Archeological Museum in Naples • Examples of workshops: • Roman jewellery; Fresco; Music & movement; Plaster working
