  2. Why is Healthcare Important? In 2002, medical costs were $5,286 National average per person has increased to $8,233 Student debt is increasing High demand for health care as population age is increasing

  3. Trends in Healthcare • Increased cost of insurance • The health care system is evolving • Medical costs increasing due to technological advancement and HMO’s are profiting

  4. Colleges in the Pacific Northwest • University of Idaho (UI) • Boise State University (BSU) • Washington State University (WSU) • Eastern Washington University (EWU) • North Idaho College (NIC) • Walla Walla Community College (WWCC)

  5. Cost NIC and WWCC provide minimal benefits

  6. Colleges Regulated by State Law • Idaho State Board of Education requires UI and BSU’s students to have insurance • Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) • BSU and UI’s SHIP programs are similar but different in cost and some benefits • Necessary services on campus provided by both colleges

  7. Non-Regulated Universities • Most offer comprehensive insurance • WSU and EWU provide third party insurance • Not all services available on campus • Compared cost per school is slightly different

  8. Benefits of Insurance Through Universities • Decreased cost, comprehensive coverage, minimal fees • Treatment is in close proximity to campus, some services are on-campus • Typically less credits are required to be eligible

  9. Two- year Colleges • Most don’t offer comprehensive coverage • Not required by law • Limited on-campus services (i.e. STD, UTI, cold, flu, strep testing and counseling) • Outside services are paid out of pocket

  10. Options for Two- year College • Considering staying on parents plan • Review outside insurance options (HMO, Medicare) • Consider optional on- campus services • Search for free/discounted services (i.e. Free clinics, health service agencies)

  11. How Do I Become Eligible? • Enroll in required credit number • Varies per school UI, NIC, and BSU are 1+ credit, WSU and EWU are 6+ credits

  12. Where do I go from here? • Quality/cost ratio • Known services offered: trauma, surgical, preventative services • Understand payment method co-pay or percentage • Take spouse/children into consideration
