  2. Background Formerly the Gold Coast before 1957 1957- acquired its independence from the Great Britain and that brought about the change of name to Ghana. The word Ghana means "Warrior King”. Ghana is located on the west coast of Africa Boarded by Burkina Faso (north), the Atlantic Ocean (south), Ivory Coast (East), and Togo (West) .

  6. FAMILY Structure • The word ‘ Family’ is used to refer to both nuclear unit and extended unit of mom, dad, siblings, uncles, cousins, aunts, grandparents, and great grandparents. CHILDREN: • It takes a village to raise a child is a popular notion. • Respect for elders. • Strong Family support system

  7. MARRIAGE • Marriage is viewed as the union between two extended families • Difficult to seek divorce because of strong family support.

  8. Economy • Gross Domestic Product(GDP) is $40.71 billion • Lower middle income • Poverty rate in 2012 was 26% as compared to 28.5% in 2006 by the World Bank. • Cedi to dollar ratio • Miminum wage 5.24 GH cedis ($2.27)

  9. Economy cont. Ghana is world’s 14th fastest growing economy in 2013 • Mineral resources – gold, diamond, bauxide, iron, coal, and oil etc. • Natural resources – shea butter, cocoa, cola, and cashew.

  14. LANGUAGES • Sole official language of instruction is the British English. • The major languages spoken are Akan, Fante, Ga, Hausa, Dagbani, Ewe, and Nzema. English is the official language of Ghana.

  16. Education • Ghana operates on a 6 -3- 4- 4 system. • This means, 6years elementary school • Junior H/S ( middle school) 3years • Senior H/S ( high school ) 4years • University/Bachelor’s Degree 4years Headmistress and primary school students

  17. Education cont. 12,630 primary schools, 5,450 junior secondary schools, 503 senior secondary schools, 21 training colleges, 18 technical institutions, two diploma-awarding institutions and five universities serving a population of 18 million

  18. Attraction/Recreation Akosombo Dam – largest artificial dam in the world. Volta lake is the largest reservoir by surface area in the world. Beaches Castles and Forts Wildlife/ Parks
