  8. BioMed Central Blog SATURDAY NOV 17, 2007 Highly accessed Nutrition Journal article on supplement usage demonstrates key benefit of open access A recent article published in BioMed Central's open access Nutrition Journal concerning the usage patterns of dietary supplements and the health and nutritional status of their users has been downloaded from the journal's website over 16,000 times since publication on October 24th. …The case actually provides a very nice example of a scenario where open access to the full text is extremely useful, for professional and lay person alike…. The funding of the study (which came from Shaklee), and the competing interests of the researchers, are clearly set out in the article. Not only that, but because Nutrition Journal operates an open peer review policy, the external peer reviewers' identities. their comments and criticisms, and the authors responses and revisions, are all open to scrutiny.

  9. Open Access Advantages • #1 most accessed article in the last 30 days! • #3 most accessed article in 2007 despite late publication on October 24, 2007!

  10. Usage Patterns, Health, and Nutritional Status of Long-Term Multiple Dietary Supplement Users: a Cross-Sectional Study October - 29 - 2007  A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the usage patterns, health, and nutritional status of individuals consuming multiple dietary supplements compared to those who took no supplements or who took only a single multivitamin/mineral supplement.  The methods used were online questionnaires and assessment of physical factors, such as blood pressure and body weight, and the survey involved a single brand of supplement…  According to the results, long-term, multiple dietary supplement users were not as likely to have high blood pressure, diabetes, and suboptimal blood nutrient concentrations as non-users and multivitamin/mineral users. http://professional.diabetes.org/News_Display.aspx?CID=57905&TYP=9
