  1. Nitrogen Cycle Prepared by Bugra Nil Kaptan Biology

  2. Nitrogen • Nitrogen is the 7th element on the periodic table. • Nitrogen is a very important element since it is essential in the production of amino acids, nucleic acids and proteins. • It is the most abundant gas in the athmosphere found as N2 • Not many organism can use up nitrogen directly. So it needs to be FIXED into ammonia or nitrates before starting to move through the ecosystem.

  3. Making it Available

  4. Not many organism can use up nitrogen directly. So it needs to be FIXED into ammonia or nitrates before starting to move.

  5. The name of the bacteria which live on the root nodules of legume plants and carry out nitrogen fixation is Rhizobium

  6. There are some other methods for the production of nitrogen compounds but the one which accounts the most is All of above Manufacture of fertilizers Emission from combustion engines Nitrogen burning in lightning NITROGEN FIXATION

  7. Explaining the Nitrogen Cycle Plants absorb ammonia and nitrate through their roots. NH4+ Organic N Bacteria fix Nitrogen molecule to organic molecules and make proteins NH4+ NO3- Animals get the nitrogen by eating the plants. Nitrogen turns back into athmosphere when that organism dies since decomposer bacteria covert the organic nitrogen into ammonia Denitrifying bacteria convert ammonia and nitrate into molecular nitrogen or nitrous oxide BACK AGAIN. NO3 NO2 NO N2O  N2 ...so Cycle Starts Over Again

  8. Human effect on Nitrogen Cycle In the recent century, people affected the nitrogen cycle by disturbing the actions which are involved in the nitrogen cycle Green house warming Thinner ozone layer Formation of smog Acid Rain Acidified Soil More tree deaths Acidified lakes and Streams Eutrophication Loss of biodiversity

  9. Eutrophication

  10. Eutrophication

  11. Acid Rain Burning fuels and wood supplies the large amount of nitric oxide in the atmosphere. When Nitric oxide combines with oxygen gas for nitrogen dioxide, it reacts with water vaporand form a strong acid that is nitric acid).  It causes acid rains.  The acid can damage trees and kill fish.

  12. Mechanism of Acid Rain

  13. What to do? • Less Traffic • Nitrogen absorbers in water • NOx Emission Control
