  2. Education & Publishing Expand • Key ? What caused education and publishing to expand? • Urban populations grew. • Industrialization created cheaper goods & more leisure time. • Public education expanded and more students learned to read.

  3. Changes in Schooling • Immigration –growth in American schools. • Taught citizenship & English. • City and state laws required children to attend school. • Schools more than doubled.

  4. Literacy Increases • Increased # of readers. • Growth of books, magazines, & newspapers. • Joseph Pulitzer – New York World; William Randolph Hearst – New York Morning Journal – fierce competitors. • Attracted readers with dramatic stories, special features, such as, comics.

  5. Pleasures of the Consumer Society • Key ? – How did Americans spend their leisure time in the late 1800s? • New products for entertainment. • Movies, music, sports, and advertising combined to shape modern American mass culture.

  6. Modern Advertising and New Products • Advertising made people aware of new products and where they could buy them. • Department stores – could buy everything. • Mail-order catalogs for people who didn’t live near a department store.

  7. Mass Culture • Leisure activities – parks, ride bikes ,play sports. • Amusement parks – rides, vendors, food. • 1876-1915- cities hosted World Fairs. • Baseball – most popular sport. Kept African Americans out. • Vaudeville – mixture of song, dance, & comedy. • Ragtime music – blend of African American and European musical forms.
