  2. What is an Epic Hero? • The main character or protagonist in an epic that is heroically larger than life • Often the source and subject of legend • Could be a national hero • Embodies the values of a particular society

  3. Characteristics • An epic hero is superhuman. He is braver, stronger, faster, smarter, and more clever than an ordinary person. • The epic hero is on a quest for something of great value to him or his people. • The epic hero is often of mixed divine and human birth and so possesses human weaknesses.

  4. Journey of the Epic Hero • Often covers great geographical distances • Obstacles of various kinds along the way • Hero must make the journey to obtain the object of his quest • Journey usually ends in a battle the hero must face alone

  5. Tragic Flaw • The error, misstep, frailty, or imperfection that causes the downfall of the hero • Example: character flaw, error in judgment, ignorance, an inherited weakness, or pure misfortune

  6. Villains • Many villains faced by an epic hero have no respect for the Gods, and certainly are not intimidated by the hero

  7. And More Villains • The villains that try to keep the hero from his task are uglier, more evil, and more cunning than anyone we know in ordinary life.

  8. Women • The hero encounters “women temptresses” who threaten the completion of his journey.
