  3. You can receive a degree in photo journalism from a local college or state university. • Some of these photographers get a degree for other subjects to better know their medium. • Some say that the most effective method is self-teaching. • The most cost effective method. Education

What Are Benefits/Negatives of a college Degree? • Professors act as coaches to gradually introduce students to more challenging areas of photography. • Students can bounce ideas off of each other. • Ability to change your mind about your major. • Focused, Structured environment. • Can help to create a portfolio. • Can be expensive. • Takes 2-4 years. • Some programs in universities aren’t well-developed.

What are Benefits/Negatives of Being Self-Taught? • Very cheap alternative to going to college. • Very easy to do because of the large number of resources. • Online courses, books, and workshops are very easy • No interaction with other photographers. • Can take a very long time to master compared to classes.

  6. Internships can help out a lot. They provide an in-depth look into the workings of a paper. Find out what it means to be a published photographer. Helps develop a portfolio. Gives you a better resume, because of the work experience. Do Internships help?

  7. You do not need a portfolio necessarily to do freelance work. Portfolios do help when applying for a long-term, secure job. Do I need a portfolio?

  8. Career Availability

  9. Job opportunities are extremely competitive. Employment is expected to grow 12% in 10 years. Many interested people aren’t as experienced as one might think. Look for jobs in large metropolitan areas. There are large amounts of different types of photo journalists. How many jobs are there in photo journalism?

  11. Median annual wages of salaried photographers were $29,440 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $20,620 and $43,530. The salaried workers generally work for papers, and earn more than freelancers. How much would I earn?

  12. In 2008, there were about 158,000 photographers. More than half of those are self-employed. This number is expected to grow by 12% from 2008-2018. How many photographers are there?

  14. Graduated from Dartmouth College, he studied Political Science and Art History. (1966-1970) He has worked aboard ships in the Merchant Marine. Self taught. He was an apprentice news film editor. Became a freelance photographer in 1980. Is a contract photographer for Time magazine. Has won many awards: Magazine Photographer of the Year 7 times.   24. Career Logistics

  25. Most use digital because of the ease of use, especially in dangerous circumstances. Most create their own schedule based on current events and freelancing. You need to front the cost yourself of all equipment. It is estimated to be at least 40 hrs./wk. if it is your full time job. Long distance travel may or may not be needed. The Ins and Outs

  26. Most time would be spent preparing to go to the event you are documenting. You need to take the photos. Also, you need to sell your photos by presenting them to a prospective buyer. More time spent would include printing, and editing the photographs. What would I do?

  27. I chose this career because I am interested in current events. Also I thought it would be cool to travel. The career would not appeal to me anymore because after a while, I would become homesick, and want to stay in place for a while. Also the pay isn’t very enough for the dangerous work they do. I would recommend this career to other photographers, because they would enjoy going around doing what the love. Personal Reaction
