  1. Revising the Specific Purpose to Meet Audience Needs

  2. Preliminary Specific Purpose: • Preliminary Specific Purpose: To warn the class about the effects of television violence. updated falln2008 sgb

  3. Preliminary Specific Purpose: • Who are they? They are 15 college students, the majority of whom range in age from 18-26. Three are over thirty; two are over forty. They are taking a required communication course. About 50 percent have younger brothers and/or sisters; 20 percent are the parents of young children. Most of those without children say they plan to have children in the future. updated falln2008 sgb

  4. Preliminary Specific Purpose: • Why are they here? • They are in class because attendance is required. • They may be preoccupied with thoughts about their own presentations or about personal matters. updated falln2008 sgb

  5. Preliminary Specific Purpose: • What do they know? • They have probably read or heard about the effects of television violence but may not be familiar with specific studies. • They are aware of the television rating system. updated falln2008 sgb

  6. Preliminary Specific Purpose: • What are their interests? • Most of them are mildly interested; • Those with children are more interested. updated falln2008 sgb

  7. Preliminary Specific Purpose: • What are their attitudes? • Most of them believe that television violence is something of a problem, but their positions are not very strong. • A few have strong opinions—believing either that television violence is very harmful or that controlling television content could ban many of the programs they enjoy. updated falln2008 sgb

  8. Preliminary Specific Purpose: • What are their learning styles? • I know most of my classmates. • The most common majors are computers, nursing, fire science, business, and process plant. • The computer, fire science, and process plant majors will need lots of concrete examples—and maybe some statistics. updated falln2008 sgb

  9. Preliminary Specific Purpose: • What are their learning styles (cont)? • The nursing students have probably seen young victims of violence in their clinical internships—they might appreciate understanding how television contributes to such tragedies. • Generally, college undergraduates learn best from concrete experiences and examples. updated falln2008 sgb

  10. Preliminary Specific Purpose: To warn the class about the effects of television violence. Revised Specific Purpose: To urge (persuade) my listeners to support measures that protect children from the harmful effects of frightening TV shows and movies. updated falln2008 sgb
