Salzburger Anstöße 2007 - Perspektiven der Arbeit Every nation and every man instantly surround themselves with a material apparatus which exactly corresponds to their moral state, or their state of thought. Observe how every truth and every error, each a thought of some man’s mind, clothes itself with societies, houses, cities, language, ceremonies, newspapers. Observe the ideas of the present day…see how each of these abstractions has embodied itself in an imposing apparatus in the community, and how timber, brick, lime, and stone have flown into convenient shape, obedient to the master idea reigning in the minds of many persons… It follows, of course, that the least change in the man will change his circumstances; the least enlargement of ideas, the least mitigation of his feelings in respect to other men…would cause the most striking changes of external things. Salzburger Anstöße 2007 - Perspektiven der Arbeit Determinant 2: Multiplicities of worldview • Assumptions matter. • Behind assumptions are worldviews. • Make these worldviews explicit. • Allow multiple worldviews. Example: The assumption in neoclassical economics that human beings are purely self-interested. Imagine what would happen to science (and our lives) if we had a different image as a starting point, for example, if instead of seeing ourselves as maximizers, we would perceive the different impulses that influence us in any given moment. What if we are not purely self-interested but our decisions oscillate between a spectrum of impulses ranging from pure self-interest to altruism? What if it is up to us to choose which impulses we wish to follow in any situation?
