Overview • Our class will be holding a dinner party next Wednesday January 18, 2012. • Each student will have a specific role: • Dinner Participants – Famous Leaders • Researchers- Introducers • Chefs/Set design- will choose symbolic food and appropriate décor for table/room. • Reporters – blogger, sketch artist, journalist

  3. Overarching Question… • Objective/Purpose for conducting the Dinner Party: leaders will discuss, analyze, and evaluate the following question: • Reflecting on the world’s history, what’s your idea of equality within society?

  4. Roles • All students need to take his/her role very seriously!! • You have a specific job and need to take pride in what role you are given. • You will have time on Tuesday 1.17.2012 to meet with others/to work on your part for Thursday 1.19.2012. • You all need to DRESS the part on Wednesday… props are also encouraged!! • This will vary based on your role…

Dinner Participants- Leaders • As a leader, you will take on the role of a famous leader from either the present or the past: • You will have a variety of leaders to choose from – you need to pick one to become for the dinner party. • Your role will be primarily verbal and will be to be the most convincing leader to the reporters viewing the dinner party. • There must be ONE ‘mystery leader’ that the class will not know the name of… • They will guess this leader’s name at the end! • Dress the part 

  6. Leaders: + - • Abraham Lincoln • Martin Luther King JR. • Mother Theresa • Hillary Clinton • Oprah Winfrey • Angelina Jolie • Adolf Hitler • Kim Jong-Il • Osama Bin Laden • Saddam Hussein • Omar al-Bashir, Sudan • Than Shwe, Burma

Researchers = Introducers  Use reliable research… Have a script ready!! • You have a VERY important role… • You will have the honor of introducing one of the leaders as they enter the dinner party. • After diligently researching your leader, you will prepare a 3/4 /one page write-up about that leader. • Legacy, personal life, achievements • Include intriguing information about the leader and make sure the audience is very informed about significant information regarding the leader before the dinner party begins!! • Dress professionally! • Make sure you are loud, clear, and have rehearsed your speech before Thursday 1.19.2012!!

  8. Your role is to create the menu for the dinner party. • You need to symbolically choose food that would be served… • You will dress up as a waiter/waitress and will serve/explain what food you and the other chefs chose for the dinner party. • You are also in charge of the set design- what should be present in the room during the dinner party… Chefs/Set design Be creative and thorough – make sure your group is organized!!

Reporters -- all students observing the dinner party! • If you are not a leader, you will be a reporter as you view “Dining with Legends’ • Reporter Choices: • New York Times Journalist/Reporter • Professional Blogger • Fox News Charlotte Journalist/Reporter • Sketch Artists- with captions • You need to take thorough notes/need to be completing your task while you watch the dinner party.

  10. Culminating Task: * 1-2 pages *Ink *Times New Roman * Size 12 font • Reporters: Who was the most effective leader at the table? Which speaker was the most convincing, why? • Give a rationale in an argumentative response. Make sure you have a thesis! • Leaders: Write an argumentative response supporting who you think was the most effective leader at the table and why? Was it yourself? Or was another leader more influential? • Be honest and support your opinion in an argumentative rationale. • DUE Friday 1.20.2012
