  4. Registration Steps • Be sure to completely fill in all personal information. • Baker 6th grade Campus • Return to PE Teacher no later than Tuesday, February 13th. • Lomax Junior High • Return to Science Teacher no later than Tuesday, February 13st.

  5. Pre-AP Rubric Criteria • Pre-AP curricula is written above the traditional curricula for that particular grade level. The instruction is fast-paced and much of the work is completed outside of the classroom. • Pre-AP classes are offered in all core academic areas: • Math • Pre-AP Pre-Algebra 7th grade (must be taken to enroll in 8th Pre-AP Algebra) • Pre-AP Algebra 8th grade (High School Credit) • Science Pre-AP • Social Studies Pre-AP • Language Arts Pre-AP • Complete and turn into LXJH Office –A list of summer reading requirements will be made available in the front office and on the campus website prior to the end of the current school year.

  6. Pre-AP Classes • Students who meet the Pre-AP criteria will automatically be placed into the Pre-AP course unless written documentation is received from the parent/guardian requesting that the student not to placed in the Pre-AP course. • Students who do NOT meet the Pre-AP criteria and enrolled in a Pre-AP class will be placed into a Regular class of that subject area unless written documentation is received from the parent/ guardian requesting the student be placed in the Pre-AP course.

High School CreditAlgebra and Spanish • Note: Awarding of Credit - If a student passes the course with a 70 or higher (which includes the semester grade and in Algebra – the EOC score) the following will occur. • The High School Transcript will show: • The course/s was/were completed satisfactorily • The awarding of state graduation credit • A record of the course/shaving been taken • HB5 Changes – Student’s Final Grade on High School Level Courses taken at the Junior High level WILL count into the Student’s High School Grade Point Average (GPA).

High School Programs • ACE-Accelerated College Education (ACE) Program: • Goal of Program-to provide students who meet the program's requirements with an opportunity to graduate from LPHS with both a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts Degree from San Jacinto Community College (SJC) by the end of their senior year. • Program Duration-Students selected will begin taking college classes at SJC during the summer before their 11th grade year, and continue taking college classes throughout their 11th grade year during the school day. The same process will occur during the summer before their 12th grade year and throughout their 12th grade year of high school. • Junior High Required Course to be on Track for ACE • 7th Grade – PAP Math • 8th Grade - Algebra • Student Requirements: • Evaluations of students eligible for acceptance into the ACE Program will occur during the Spring of their 10th grade year. • Students must make at least an 80 in Algebra 2 PAP or Pre-Calculus during their 10t h grade year. • Besides the math requirement, students must also make at least an 80 in two other PAP/AP courses during their 10t h grade year. • Student attendance must be at least 95%. • Students must also have no SAC, Out of School Suspensions, or DAEP placements.

High School Programs • Dual Enrollment Program • LPISD and San Jacinto College offer courses at the College Center, as well as San Jac College allowing students to earn high school and college credit at the same time. Registration is open to students in the 11th and 12th grades. Students must meet enrollment and testing requirements of San Jacinto College. Grades, discipline records and attendance are verified before enrollment. Students must have a meningitis vaccination prior to enrollment. • Benefits of PAP/AP toward college enrollment •   Pre-AP and AP courses teach students skills that can lead to success in college.  Students will develop the writing skills, problem-solving techniques, and study habits that will prepare him/her for college academics.  Plus, taking rigorous Pre-AP and AP courses demonstrates a student’s maturity, willingness to push him/herself intellectually, and commitment to academic excellence, which can help him/her stand out in the college admissions process. AP and Pre-AP students are also rewarded with an extra point on their GPA.  • At the end of the AP class, students have an opportunity to take the AP Exam. AP Exams are given once a year in May.  These exams provide students with a standardized measure of what they’ve accomplished in the AP classroom.  Colleges and universities will use these AP Exam grades to possibly award the student credit, placement or both.

  11. 7th and 8TH GRADE ELECTIVESALL ELECTIVES ARE FOR A FULL YEAR • BAND(Placed in appropriate Band by LXJH Staff) • COURSE LENGTH: Full Year • PREREQUISITE: • One year of beginningband or equivalent; or audition. • Must have been in Band in 6th grade • CHOIR (Placed in appropriate Choir by LXJH Staff) • COURSE LENGTH: Full Year • PREREQUISTIE: • Varsity Girls Choir - Director approval • No Prerequisite for Girls or Boys Choir • ORCHESTRA (Placed in appropriate Orchby LXJH Staff) • COURSE LENGTH: Full Year • PREREQUISITE: • One year of beginning orchestra or equivalent; or audition • Must have been in Orchestra in 6th grade

  12. 7th and 8TH GRADE ELECTIVES • ATHLETICS(Please read details explained in planner) • Students must have a physicalto try out and participate in the program (must be turned in by end of 2013-2014 school year) • Course Length: Full Year • Prerequisite: 7th Grade - Physical, 8th Grade - Coach Approval and Physical • PE • This program has a strong emphasis in life-time health and physical fitness principles which develops individual and team sport skills in both co-operative and competitive settings. • Course Length: Full Year • Prerequisite: None

  14. 7th and 8THGRADE ELECTIVES • Yearbook – Student work to create our Lomax Yearbook. They attend games and functions to take pictures and put the yearbook together. Must have good leadership skills and behavior in the classroom. Application must be filled out.

  15. 8TH GRADE ELECTIVESHS Credit – Spanish • Spanish IA & 1B • It covers basic to intermediate vocabulary and grammar concepts in Spanish. • It focuses on Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Spelling, and Culture. • The course is rigorous and requires a commitment to homework every night. • COURSE LENGTH: 2 semesters – 1 Year • PREREQUISITE: STAAR Test Scores and maintain an 85 or higher in 7th grade Language Arts • If you speak Spanish at home, it is NOT recommended that you take Spanish in Jr. High.  Spanish speaking students should consider taking Spanish for Native Speakers in High School. • The State of Texas Graduation requirement is a minimum of 2 HS credits (not years) in a Language Other Than English.

  17. What is AVID? • AVID - (Advancement Via Individual Determination) – Program to promote college attendance to students who meet criteria • AVID is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college

What does a potential AVID student look like? • Students with Academic Potential • Passed previous year’s STAAR Math and Reading tests • 2.0-3.5 GPA • Determination to succeed • Meets One or More of the Following Criteria • First to Attend College • Historically Underserved in 4-year Colleges • Low Income • Special Circumstances

  20. What is expected of an AVID student? • Keep an organized binder • Use a planner • Take notes daily • Participate in twice weekly tutorials • Maintain a minimum B average • Enroll in at least one Pre AP course
