  2. In the next 30 mins… A snapshot of International Retail Trends, including: • Global retail sales • Online shopping • Mobile devices • Social networking • Retail technology developments • Green retailing

  3. Global Retail Sales • According to Deloitte’s Global Powers of Retailing (2010), the Top 250 retailers exceeded sales of US$3.8 trillion as at June 2009. • This was an increase of 5.5% on the previous year, but many sales were ‘bought’ with heavy discounting and promotions. • More than 60% of the companies surveyed saw a decline in net profit and 30 companies operated at a loss (more than double the previous period, which stood at 14 companies).

  4. New Zealand retail sales • There were 26,629 retail outlets operating in NZ in 2009. • Total retail sales in 2009 reached NZ$43.4 billion, compared to NZ$43.2 billion in 2008. • NZ ranked 48 in terms of retail sales compared to the rest of the world (52 countries). • NZ ranked 16 in terms of retail sales as a portion of consumer expenditure (33.8%).

  7. Global online shopping • Nielsen conducted a survey in March 2010 of Internet users in 55 markets from Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East, North America and South America to look at how consumers shop online. • Globally, one-thirdof online consumers do their Internet shopping at retailers that have only an online presence (such as Amazon.com). • 20% of respondents prefer sites that also have “brick and mortar” stores. • Checking online reviews are popular for some products—particularly consumer electronics and cars.

  10. Mobile Devices The 2009 annual Australian Mobile Phone Lifestyle Index released by the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association found the following statistics: • 77% of respondents used their mobile for a purpose other than voice and SMS. • 36% used email on their mobiles in the past 12 months, and, of those, almost half used email daily - a growth rate of 80% over the previous year. • 32% of respondents accessed social networking sites from their handsets, with half of those accessing the sites daily. This was up 7% on last years survey • General web browsing is also on the rise, with 21% of respondents visiting websites on their mobile phones at least once a day.

  11. Tube Refund application • Each time a train is delayed by more than 15 minutes, riders are entitled to a full refund of a single-journey fare. • Priced at GBP 0.59, the application can be used to register where and when a delay occurred and how long it lasted. • Tube Refund then submits that information to the London Underground website, which generates a refund voucher for the user.

  12. Mobile phone applications • Augmented reality • The Layar Reality Browser shows what is around you by displaying real time digital information on top what can be seen through the camera of your mobile phone. • Layar works by using a combination of the mobile phone’s camera, compass and GPS data to identify the user’s location and field of view, retrieve data based on those geographical coordinates, and overlay that data over the camera view.
