  2. ISSUE In light of pending major expansion of programs into the Lewiston/ Auburn community, how does Tedford Housing effectively establish a presence and build relationships there?

  3. MISSION Tedford Housing works to end homelessness in mid coast Maine by providing, in collaboration with others, shelter, housing, and services to those in need. We work to help people become more self-sufficient and advocate for change so that no one faces the prospect of being without a home.

  4. HISTORY • 1987: Churches in Bath- Brunswick create Tedford Shelter. • 2006: The name changes to Tedford Housing- reflecting a focus on ending homelessness and the creation of supportive housing options. • Tedford Housing now operates a shelter program and 27 units of permanent supportive housing in mid coast Maine. • In recent years, Tedford has become a leader in providing services to the homeless.

CURRENT PROGRAMS Emergency Shelter 20 beds for adults 6 units (26 beds) for families Homelessness Prevention Serves approximately 700 each year Information and referral Landlord –tenant mediation Case management Supportive Housing Safe, affordable housing paired with services, provided on-site • Everett Apartments- 8 units for adults- Brunswick • Gilbert Place- 5 units for adults- Bath • Evergreen Woods- 6 units for families- Bath • Pleasant Street- 2 units for families- Augusta • Master Lease Apartments- 6 units- Bath-Brunswick Merrymeeting Project- Youth Outreach Advocates for educational rights of homeless youth A collaboration with three school programs: RSU-1, Brunswick and SAD 75.

DESCRIPTION AND STATUS OF LEWISTON- AUBURN PROJECTS • 22 Pine Street, Auburn: 6 1-BR units for single adults with a disability; rehabilitation of an old school • 84 Pine Street, Lewiston: 10 family apartments in Lewiston; new construction • Tedford owns both properties; secured most of the capital financing (grants) • Architectural and engineering plans are underway • Construction likely to begin within the next year.

ISSUES AT STAKE • Tedford enjoys, and depends on, immense support in the mid coast area. • We need the support (financial and otherwise) of the Lewiston-Auburn community in order to be successful in this initiative. • We want to be good neighbors and ultimately, create a base of support which will sustain us in the future • We know that it “takes a village” to end and prevent homelessness

WHAT WOULD SUCCESS LOOK LIKE? • Businesses, organizations and residents of Lewiston-Auburn would recognize and hold in high esteem, the name Tedford Housing. • We would receive referrals for services. • We could consider ourselves “introduced and welcomed”. We would begin building a database of supporters and partners. • We would receive financial support from the individuals and organizations in the community • We would have structured volunteer opportunities, e.g., family mentoring program.

  13. BEST PRACTICES IN MID COAST • Frequent news releases and feature articles. • Frequent speaking engagements. • Member of many organizations, e.g., Chamber of Commerce. • Relationships with state, municipal, business and non-profit partners.

  14. WHAT IS IN PLACE ALREADY? • Municipal support. • Working relationship with other nonprofits. • Membership in LAASH. • Partnership with Androscoggin Bank.

  15. CHALLENGES • Lack of presence in and knowledge about the community. • Capital funding gap. • NIMBY
