Hargreaves - emotional distances between parents,teachers/providers • Socio-cultural - the differences between cultures • Moral - assumptions about “right” and “wrong” parenting styles • Professional - the expert mask we feel we must wear • Physical - the psychological space we require • Political - behavior that is prudent to save face

  5. Parents are Powerful • 1. Self-select into four groups - Preschool, Elementary, Middle School, or High School, to discuss working with parents . • 3. Distribute the Parents are Powerful workbooks, discussion guidelines and have each group silently read the corresponding age group section (just 4 pages) for discussion. • 4. Have each group discuss the following questions at their table:

  6. Parents are Powerful - discussion • a. Do the parents I work with understand the developmental stages or contexts their children are in? How do I know? • b. Do they understand the things their children should be learning to do? How do I know? • c. Do they understand what they should be looking for in a good school? How do I know? • d. Do they understand what they should be asking of the teachers and the school? HDIK? • e. Do they understand what they should be discussing with their children?HDIK? • f. What strategies, interventions or programs does our site have/or need to develop to better ensure accomplishment of a-e? • g. What commitments can we make to ensure we go back and work on this after today?

  7. Parents are powerful - standards discussion • Turn to page 22 - Higher Standards - and read pages 22-25 silently. • At the individual tables, discuss what your sites are/ or are not doing to empower parents to address standards and student/parent rights. • As a whole group - share new insights, plans and commitments that have resulted from today's discussions.
