  2. Smart Phones The question that faces many buyers in today’s world is whether to buy multi-purpose phones or continue to buy individual gadgets. Smart Phones, like the iPhone and BlackBerry, offer: • Digital music • Digital camera • Personal-navigation system • Internet • Operating systems

  3. Some Ways Smart Phones affect the Economy • The Consumers Electronic Association predicts a 30% increase in the amount of Smart Phones to 37.4 million units to be sold this year. • This will affect the sales of GPS. • Portable media players and digital cameras are also losing profits.

  4. Comparing Prices • Smart Phones have an initial cost around $200 compared to the combined costs of the gadgets that a Smart Phone contains of $390. • However, Smart Phones require a monthly service or subscription fee from carriers that can be up to $100/month.

  5. Disadvantages of Smart Phones • The quality of the camera does not match that of stand alone cameras: lack of image editing features • Quoted by Tyler Grant, “I don't need a whole lot in a camera, but this (Smart Phone) still needs some improvement.” • Monthly fee for applications • Running applications shortens battery life

  6. Advantages of Smart Phones • Condenses multiple technology gadgets into one • Chester Vargas likes the GPS updates of Smart Phones • Vargas also stated his pictures off the Smart Phone are no different than pictures off his Canon digital camera

Smart Phones and Companies • Some companies are joining forces with Smart Phones • Apple: iPhone • SanDisk: slot-Music memory cards preloaded with music; trying to replace CDs • Other companies are trying to improve their features in order to compete with Smart Phones • TomTom: improving GPS services • Garmin: producing their own version of a Smart Phone– the Nuvifone
