    3. 3 1. Applications 1.1 Basic Applications E-mail Web File transfer

    4. 4 1.2 PUST (1) Teaching Download of teaching material Remote class Remote facility access Cyber class" (2) Research Research collaboration meeting Remotethesis supervision (3) Digital library Journal access Database access

    5. 5 1.3 Knowledge industry complex and research institutes (1) (Remote) Meeting (2) File transfer (software, document)

    6. 6 2. Links (1) Satellite link to KCCKP through KPTC. (2) Research and Education Network links (KREONET in Korea and/or CERNET in China) (3) Optical fiber deployment to Tandong, Vladivostok and/or Seoul.

    7. 7 3. Infrastructure - Campus Network (1) PUST backbone network between buildings would be 1 Gbps with optical cable. (2) Networking inside of buildings can be 100 Mps or 1 Gbps depending on rooms. (3) Wireless access(WiFi) would be available in all classrooms, meeting rooms and other public rooms (library, restaurant), but not in personal rooms (office room, dormitory room) without special request. (4) Outdoor wireless access is available in limited places ( to be decided).

    8. 8 4.1 Initial Plan (2007Q3) 4. Infrastructure International

    9. 9 4.2 Plan for 2010 PUST (10~1,000 Mbps) China

    10. 10 4.3 Remark (1) PUST links in 2007Q3 will be satellite. (2) The current links to Pyongyang are typically 64~128Kbps satellite links to Germary(KCCPK) through KPTC. (3)We need to find out availability of links with bandwidth. (4)It would cost around 1,200 Euro per 128 Kbps per month. (5) PUST may have links to local universities.

    11. 11 5. Issues 5.1 Governmental approval We need the governmental approvals (Education Ministry, KPTC, ).The best way to convince the government includes showing the applications at PUST including research activities.

    12. 12 5.2The availability of bandwidth 5. Issues (continue)

    13. 13 5.3 Backup Link We need good backup. Initial Phase (2007Q3~) Two satellite links such as at 256 Kbps each. Second Phase (2010) The wireline link as the primary link with wireline or satellite link as the backup link. 5. Issues (continue)

    14. 14 5.4 Face-to-Face Meeting and Fedex/DHL The environment as PUST is unique. Taking a business trip to any foreign city is very hard (visa, airplane,...). Thus, we have to substitute by video conferencing in many cases. Mail delivery would be similar, and there are no Fedex or DHL now, and we have to substitute by file transfer as much as possible. Therefore, we have to have good Internet access (to send bits instead of atoms in Negroponte's term). This is particular true to companies and research institutes in PUST campus. 5. Issues (continue)

    15. 15 5.5 Mirroring We expect PUST servers to be mirrored in China (CERNET, CSTNET and/or YUST). Mirroring and caching of foreign sites may be done extensively at PUST. 5. Issues (continue)

    16. 16 Reference 1. AI3, www.ai3.net Satellite Internet in Asia 2. CERNET, www.cernet.edu.cn R&D network in China 3. KISTI, www.kisti.re.kr Korean Institute with R&E network, KOREONET 4. KCCKP in Germany Satellite access 5. PUST (Pyongyang University of Science & Technology) www.pust.net

    17. 17 Appendix : Access Level 1. Subscriber on Commercial ISP(~64Kbps) email pickup and delivery 2. Satellite link (64~128Kbps) email and file transfer 3. Satellite link (256~512Kbps) Video (Remote Class, Limited Video conference) Limited research 4. Wireline link (1~2 Mbps) Reasonable search Reasonable video conferencing 5. Wireline link (8~155 Mbps) Typical university in Korea 6. Wireline link (1 Gbps) Good university in the world.
