  1. LOTF: Embedding Text

  2. Embedding Text Support • Embedding text requires the writer to make the words of the author’s sentence fit flawlessly into the context of their sentence.

  3. Examples • Sam and Eric do everything together, sharing one mind between them. • “But they could never manage to do things sensibly if that meant acting independently.” • Sam and Eric share one mind, for they could never accomplish a task “if that meant acting independently.” • Sam and Eric “could never manage to do things sensibly,” if one was forced to separate themselves from his counterpoint.

  4. Examples • The boys armed themselves with fear and flimsy spears as they readied themselves to take on the Beast. • The boys “bristled with hunting spears” recognizing that “the bright morning was full of threats” forming a “fence of sharpened wood” in the anticipation of the great undefined evil on the horizon.

  5. Provide Text Support- Chapter 8 • The relationship between Ralph and Jack sours as a result of Jack’s continued insistence that Ralph is unfit to rule. • Jack is shamed by his failed mutiny, finding his request for the voters’ assent met silence. • Piggy’s reticence in speaking and leading vanish once Jack departs from the group, allowing him to fully use the creativity of his brain. • Jack’s initial hunt after gaining control of a contingent of hunters is an emotional mixture of lust and violence. • Simon finds himself face to face with the Lord of the Flies whose evil influence is already spreading throughout the island and longs to corrupt Simon.
