General Guidance: • Read the guidelines in both the Grant Proposal Guide (GPG) and the Program Announcement! • Proposal Development Finding Aid for NSF – SSRI Website • Consult colleagues that have had success with the program – examples on SSRI website • Meet with your mentor early and create a plan for completing tasks leading up to the submission deadline NSF DDIG/DDRIG @ Duke

Fastlane • Cover Sheet • Primary Place of Performance • Select Program Announcement • Select Appropriate Division and Program • Check PA for earliest start date • Title – Should begin with • “DISSERTATION RESEARCH:” (Biological Sciences) • “Doctoral Dissertation Research:” (Social, Behavioral, Economic Sciences) • List Mentor as PI and Student as Co-PI (Change PI option) NSF DDIG/DDRIG @ Duke

Fastlane • Budget • Personnel – make sure all zeros in this section • Delete student from budget (add/remove senior personnel button) • Most items will fall under Travel or Other • Work closely with grant staff in your department to develop your budget • F&A Costs – are now applicable on DDIG/DDRIG proposals. Duke’s current rate is 57% unless your research will take place off campus. • Budget Justification • A narrative description of the numbers in your budget • Work with grant staff NSF DDIG/DDRIG @ Duke

Fastlane • Facilities, Equipment & Other Resources • Describe all organizational resources necessary for the project • Work with your department to determine if you are unsure • Project Summary • Third person “The Investigator will” or “This study will” versus “I will” • Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts • Project Description • Consult PA and GPG • Biological Sciences: 8 page limit • SBE: page limit varies NSF DDIG/DDRIG @ Duke

Fastlane • Biographical Sketches • Include for both Mentor and Student • 2 page limit • Not the same as NIH format! • Current and Pending Support • Include for both Mentor and Student • List the current proposal as pending • No need to include student’s institutional support NSF DDIG/DDRIG @ Duke
