Food Insecurity in California • From 2001 till present food insecurity increased by each year with the numbers in the thousands. • CalWORKS is available for citizens in need for it. • Other government assistance is available like Food Stamps,Unemployed Benefits, TANF, CHIP, etc. • The problem is getting worse and worse by the year, it’s starting to affect students such as high school, college, etc. • Really hard for farmers in Northern California.

  3. Chart of Food Insecurity in California • Here is a chart of all of the food insecurity going on in our state. • The top counties are Imperial, Merced, Tulare, Fresno, and Colusa. Mainly where farmers grow their crops. • Where the state is colored dark green and olive green is where child food insecurity is located.

Food Insecurity Among College Students • An estimated half of all college students struggle with food insecurity. • Former foster youth, L.G.B.T students, and students of color are at substantially increased risk. • Strongly linked to lower graduation rates. • Obesity is actually associated with food insecurity because buying less nutritious food like dollar cheeseburgers is way cheaper than nutritious food. • Due to issues of stigma students are ashamed to ask for help from their parents and federal social services. • Food insecurity can lead to higher stress, lower sleep quality, lower health, low energy levels compared to food secure students, depression, and disruptions when it came to academic work becuase of depression.

Possible Solutions Government Aid programs as a whole are so far the only solutions put into place that act as a “safety net” for people in need. • TAFDC (Traditional Aid to Families with Dependent Children) • TANIF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) • SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) • Unemployment
