Competency #3 (A)Demographic Indicators* Students will define two (or more) demographic indicators of development* Students will identify the indicators used to calculate HDI Competency #1 (A) Economic Indicators • Students will define two (or more) measurements of economic level for countries • Students will distinguish between, and provide examples of primary, secondary, and tertiary jobs • Students will distinguish between, and provide examples of quaternary and quinary jobs Competency #2 (A) Social Indicators • Students will define two (or more) social indicators of economic level for countries • Students will explain, using examples, reasons for uneven distribution of access to healthcare in LDCs and the U.S.

  3. #4 – Uneven Development (B) • Students will explain reasons for uneven development at a global scale • Students will describe the role of colonialism and neo-colonialism on uneven development • Students will explain causes and effects of uneven development at the national scale in the U.S. and at least 3 other countries

  4. #5 – Gender (A) • Students will compare and contrast the roles of women in different societies • Students will identify ways that women are systematically oppressed in various parts of the world • Students will explain, using examples, ways that some societies are achieving development goals by focusing on women

  5. #6 – Problems with development (B) • Students will describe, using examples, barriers that slow or stop development in some LDC countries • Students will explain at least three negative consequences of rapid development • Students will describe 3-4 examples of NGOs that assist countries in development AND the problems caused by these tactics

  6. #7 – World Systems (A) • Students will explain, providing at least 3 examples for each, how geographers divide the world according to level of development • Students will explain how the world can be divided according to Wallerstein • Students will describe the current international division of labor • Students will describe shifts in the international division of labor in the last 100 years

  7. #8 – Development Strategies (A) • Students will explain each stage of Rostow’s development model • Students will describe, using examples, successes of the international trade models • Students will explain the self sufficiency model • Students will analyze problems with the international trade model
