Oyunun, çocuğun gelişimi üzerindeki etkileri ne kadar önemliyse, aynı şekilde oyun materyalleri de çok önemlidir • Oyuncaklar, çocuğun seçme, değerlendirme duygusunu ve yaratıcılığını geliştirirken aynı zamanda da kendi kendine karar verebilme ve belirli alanlarda beceriler kazanmasına da olanaklar hazırlamaktadır. • Bu durumda bizler oyuncakları, ?gelişim basamakları boyunca çocuğun hareketlerine düzen getiren zihinsel, bedensel ve psiko-sosyal gelişimlerinde yardımcı olan hayal gücünü ve yaratıcı yeteneklerini geliştiren tüm oyun malzemeleridir? şeklinde tanımlayabiliriz.
