  1. Quick Quiz • What is ATP made from? • What is the GCSE photosynthesis equation? • What is a grana? • Tricky one… Why is chlorophyll green?

  2. Photosynthesis 3. We can still view photosynthesis as a whole process. • The light dependent reaction (LDR) and the light independent reaction (LIR) link together. • The LDR uses water and produces oxygen. • The LIR uses carbon dioxide and produces glucose. carbon dioxide + water  glucose + oxygen

  3. Light dependent reaction • Describe the main stages in the light dependent reaction • Explain how energy produced during the light dependent reaction is harvested in photosynthesis. • Relate the chemistry of the light dependent reaction to the GCSE photosynthesis equation.

  4. Light dependent reaction Chlorophyll extracted from spinach under blue light.

  5. Light dependent reaction • The chlorophyll fluoresces red because the electrons within it are ‘excited’. When excited they emit energy in the form of red light.

  6. The light dependent reaction • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v590JJV96lc

  7. The light dependent reaction

  8. Key points of the LDR • Takes place on the thylakoid membrane. • Photosystem II comes before photosystem I.

  9. Key points of the LDR Photosystem II -Light hits PS II chlorophyll molecule. -Electrons are excited and pass onto electron carrier. -Electrons are then passes along the electron transport chain. -Electron lose energy as they pass to each carrier. -This energy is used to drive ATP synthesis. -But PS II has lost electrons. These are given back to PS II by the photolysis of water. H2O  ½ O2 + H2 + 2 e-

  10. Key points of the LDR Photosystem I -Light hits PS I chlorophyll molecule. -Electrons are excited and pass onto electron carrier. -Electrons are then passes along the electron transport chain. -Electron lose energy as they pass to each carrier. -This energy is used to drive NADPH production -But NADPH production also requires H+ ions. These come from the photolysis of water.
