  8. The History of Weight Loss Surgery: In the 1950s, bariatric surgery had a very slow start with the intestinal bypass also known as anastomosis. This process connected the upper and lower intestine to bypass the greater portion of the absorptive circuit. The malabsorption of food and calories resulted in weight loss in the patient. Drs. J. Howard Payne, Lorent T. DeWind and Robert R. Commons then created the Jejuno-colic Shunt in 1963 to connect the upper small intestine to the colon. Dr. Edward E. Mason (b.1920) and Dr. Chikashi Ito conducted laboratory research in 1965 at the University of Iowa which eventually resulted in the development of the original gastric bypass which enhanced the safety of the procedure and decreased intestinal bypass post-operative complications.
