  2. Canned Beans Become Approved October 1, 2011 • Another option for WIC participants in addition to dry beans and peas • Readily available at authorized WIC vendors • Consumer demand has shifted greatly in recent years from dried beans in packets to canned beans

  3. The Requirements for Canned Beans • Can only be purchased with Food Instruments (FIs) • Any brand and variety of plain beans • 15 oz to 16 oz cans • Can have added salt and sugar • Can be labeled reduced sodium • Cannot have added meat, sauces, or spices • Cannot be labeled organic

  4. It’s Time to Test Your Knowledge So Let’s Play “To Bean or Not to Bean”

  5. But Before We Begin A Disclaimer: Please note that all examples used in this presentation are representative samples of approved and non-approved WIC foods. Any product described as approved is not specifically endorsed by the Tennessee WIC Program.

  6. Here’s our First Question • Are either of these products approved? 16 ounces 15 ounces

  7. The Answer Is Yes Any brand of plain beans in the correct size is approved

  8. Now Here’s Our Second Question These have tomato sauce, but no meat These have both tomato sauce and meat Are they approved? Are they approved?

  9. The Answer is No for Both Approved products cannot have added meat, sauces or spices

  10. We Now Move on to Our Third Question • Are these products primarily aimed at Hispanic participants approved? 15 ounces 16 ounces 16 ounces

  11. The Answer is Yes for All of Them Again, any brand of plain beans in the correct size is approved

  12. And Now Here is Our Fourth and Final Question • Are either one of these Great Northern Beans approved? 15.5 ounces 15 ounces No Salt Added

  13. The One on the Left is Approved, The One on the Right is Not Plain beans in the right Plain beans in the right size can, but organic size can
