On the Daily Presentations page you will find a link for vocab flashcards. Use the first 10 minutes of class to get familiar with the key vocab for this unit.

Essential Question: Is “Dark Ages” a fair characterization for Europe between 600 -1450 CE? What caused Western Europe to adopt a feudal structure? Why didn’t the Byzantine Empire collapse in the same manner as Western Europe?

  4. -OUS: This Suffix means “ is Filled With” Magnanimous – filled with generosity and forgiveness magnanimous On first glance, MAGNANIMOUS looks like a “big” and difficult SAT word. But looks can be deceiving. Let’s use our knowledge of prefixes, roots, and the suffix –OUS to divide and conquer MAGNANIMOUS. The prefix MAGNA is easy to recognize. It means “big” as in the word MAGNIFY. The root ANIM comes from the Latin “animex” meaning “breath” or “soul.” An animal is thus a living, breathing thing, and an inanimate object lacks spirit. And finally, the suffix –OUS means “is Filled With.” So MAGNANIMOUS literally means “filled with a great spirit” and therefore generous and forgiving. For example, following General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, General Ulysses S. Grant MAGNANIMOUSLY allowed the Confederate officers to keep their side arms and permitted soldiers to keep personal horses and mules.   9. Guided Note-Taking: Please pick up a reading packet from the front table and Cornell Notes packet. You will have the next 25 minutes to read and take notes on the reading packet. As you read, pay careful attention to the essential question and guiding questions noted. You will NOT be able to take the packet with you (class set), so use your time wisely and efficiently.

  10. Summarizer: • Now that you have read a bit about Medieval Europe, create a recipe that explains how to create a “Dark Age.” Use the directions provided on the handout to help facilitate your recipe based on what you read. ?
