The Irish Games Industry Lets SWOT it ! EirplayMedia (c) 2008
EirplayMedia (c) 2008 Strengths • Ireland is a nation of gamers! • We have the 2nd highest number of Playstations per capita in the world • Notable success in games middleware, plus some good start-ups • We have one of the highest penetration rates of mobile phones and active game portals with each of the mobile operators. • In the last 6 years, 8 new computer game courses have been setup. • There are a large number of FPS (first person shooter) clans and organised LAN gaming communities. • One of the reasons major game publishers (Vivendi, Activision & Microsoft) locate their localisation centres here, is due to our large active gaming population…and yeah, the tax rate.. • Yet, where is the local development industry
EirplayMedia (c) 2008 Weaknesses • Hmmm.. This could take a while • No tradition / experience in game development (producing in particular) • No publishers • Not a priority industry • Investors here like technology over content • And…….. So you want to make a film promo/shot, you go to the Film Board. So you want to make a game prototype, you go…..
EirplayMedia (c) 2008 Opportunities
EirplayMedia (c) 2008 Opportunities • Casual Games / Web 2.0 • Deliberate move by the traditional games industry to expand the market • Games for the mass market: older game players, female game players, non-technical game players • New technologies allows games to be deployed on consumer devices such as PDAs, interactive TV and mobile phones • Games types for newer devices; Word/puzzles, sports, licensed games (film/pop), location based • Xbox Live, Wii, Guitar Hero….
EirplayMedia (c) 2008 Threats • We all end up working for Google • We all up working for the government • All our potential game developers emigrate. • We loose interest in gaming…. I don’t think so!
EirplayMedia (c) 2008 Making Casual Games • Much of the same skills needed for PC / console games • Software: Java,Flash, though other languages always preferable • Art: same tools such as Photoshop, 3D Max. More focus on 2D, plus drawing skills vital!!! • Level Design: Experience of PC, console, online & mobile games, plus other media • Qualifications count…..
