  2. King George III George William Frederick became king at a very young age. He was about 23 years old when he gained the throne, but he was the ruler of England for 59 years. He led England into the French and Indian War in an effort to build his empire. England won the war and gained control of the colonies. King George III taxed the colonies to pay for the war. The colonies began to rebel against his tyrannical rule. They fought for and gained their independence during the Revolutionary War. King George III is remembered as the king who lost the colonies.

  3. George Washington George Washington was born and raised in Virginia. He was the son of a very successful farmer. He fought in the French and Indian War. In 1773, congress made Washington the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. He led his troops to victory and helped America gain its independence from the British. He later became the first president of the United States.

  4. John Adams John Adams was a lawyer from Massachusetts. He participated in the protests against the Stamp Act. He also believed that everyone was entitled to a fair trial, which led him to defend two British Soldiers who were accused of firing at a group colonists who were harassing them. He served on the Declaration of Independence Committee and later became the second president of the United States.

  5. Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin was a talented leader in the colonial era. He is remembered as a scientist and an inventor. He discovered lightening was made of electricity, and he invented a special kind of glasses called bifocals. Franklin also helped to write the Declaration of Independence.

  6. Patrick Henry Patrick Henry was born and raised in Virginia where he served five terms as governor. He became famous for a speech he gave just before the American Revolution. In 1775, Patrick Henry urged his fellow Virginians to take up arms and fight for freedom from British rule. During this memorable speech he spoke these words, “Give me liberty, or give me death!” Patrick Henry was a true American Patriot!

  7. Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson was the youngest member of the Second Continental Congress. He wasn’t known as a great public speaker, but he was certainly recognized as a talented writer! Jefferson was chosen to be main author of the Declaration of Independence. It took him about two weeks and several drafts before it was finished. Jefferson later became the third presidentof the United States.

  8. Benedict Arnold Benedict Arnold is remembered as a traitor or turncoat. He was an officer in the Continental Army who became angry about the way he was treated. He led the Continental Army to several victories, but never received the honor he felt he deserved. AS a result, he turned against the patriots and joined forced with the British army.
