The World Wide Web • The World Wide Web ("WWW" or simply the "Web") is a global information medium which users can read and write via computers connected to the Internet. • Hypertext, as originally realized, was a closed system • Simple, universal protocols (e.g. HTTP) and mark-up languages (e.g. HTML) made publishing and accessing easy • Critical mass of users lead to a complete transformation of our information economy.

Ubiquitous Computing • Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) is an advanced computing concept where computing is made to appear everywhere and anywhere. • can occur using any device, in any location, and in any format • Technologies to support ubiquitous computing include Internet, advancedmiddleware, operating system, mobile code, sensors, microprocessors, new I/O and user interfaces, networks, mobile protocols, location and positioning and new materials.

Sensor-based and Context-aware Interaction • Humans are good at recognizing the “context” of a situation and reacting appropriately • Automatically sensing physical phenomena (e.g., light, temp, location, identity) becoming easier • How can we go from sensed physical measures to interactions that behave as if made “aware” of the surroundings?
