  5. Ponce de Leon 1513 • Source • He landed on Florida's east coast near present-day St. Augustine. • The First Conquistador. • He named it La Florida (LAH flow REE dah) or "place of flowers." • Came to Convert the American Indians. Source

  6. Panfilo de Narvaez 1528 • He arrived near Tampa Bay • Searching for Gold • Left his ships to start his expedition • Never finds his ships • Drowned with many of his men trying to sail to Mexico. Source

  7. Hernando de Soto 1539 • He arrived near Tampa Bay • Originally planned to build a settlement • Searched for Gold • Killed, kidnapped and enslaved the Timucua and Apalachee Indians. • Died while looking for gold. Source

  8. Activities Students work in pairs to create word search puzzles from the lesson vocabulary words. They can share their puzzles with other students and try to find the words. Map Making Step 1: List starting point, stops along the way, and ending point of the route to take to school Step 2:Make an outline map of your community. Label each point from Step 1. Step 3: Choose a color for the line you will draw to show the route on the map. Label a line with that color in a legend. Step 4: draw the route Step 5: Add a map title
