  2. India • England controlled India through British East India Company • India only in world market with raw materials • (Wait, what happened to those textile ‘factories’?) • No conscious plan to rule (gov’t stepped in) • India Act of 1784 –regulated company and set up courts

  3. Huge population (300,000,000, so English used locals to keep control • British educated locals to be interpreters and think like Brits – English became educated language • Hindus flocked to schools and became equal with Muslims • Hindu Renaissance • But rejected some Hindu practices (Sati)

  4. British unwittingly stimulated Indian sense of nationalism • English becomes common language

  5. Rebellion 1857 (Sepoy Rebellion) • A sepoy is an Indian soldier in the British army • Put down by British • India comes under official rule of crown • Queen Victoria became Empress of India • Nationalism grew • Indian National Congress formed 1885

  6. Think about inventions of the 1800s • British expansion becomes easier: • Clipper ships (ENG to IND in 3 months) • Steamships – 1850s (No faster, just more reliable) • Suez Canal – 1869 (Three weeks) • Telegraphs – 1870 (Hours)
