  2. Part I: Answer the prompt • The first step to successful academic expression is to do the most basic thing – answer the prompt. For example . . . another spectacular MOIO presentation

  3. Answer the Prompt . . . • Prompts will call on you to either respond to a direct question, or to interpret something from the reading. Direct EX. – “How did Lennie react when George scolded him for carrying around a dead mouse?” Interpretation EX. - “Explain the significance of Lennie’s reaction to George when George scolded him for carrying around a dead mouse.” another spectacular MOIO presentation

  4. Answer the Prompt . . . Direct EX. – “How did Lennie react when George scolded him for carrying around a dead mouse?” Interpretation EX. - “Explain the significance of Lennie’s reaction to George when George scolded him for carrying around a dead mouse.” • In either case, your answer should directly address the prompt: Direct EX. - “Lennie reacted by crying. He was upset because George was angry with him the way a child would be upset when a parent is angry with them.” Interpretation EX. – “Lennie’s reaction is significant because it shows his childishness. His inability to handle George’s reaction indicates that he depends on George the way a child depends on a parent.” another spectacular MOIO presentation

  5. Part II: Use SPECIFIC DETAILSto Support Your Answers • Specific details ARE NOT plot recaps. Take our example from the previous slide . . . another spectacular MOIO presentation

  6. Use SPECIFIC DETAILS to Support • If your answer is, “Lennie’s reaction is significant because it shows his childishness. His inability to handle George’s reaction indicates that he depends on George the way a child depends on a parent,” then your evidence must be taken directly from the text to support your thinking. another spectacular MOIO presentation

  7. Part II: Use SPECIFIC DETAILSto Support Your Answers . . . • Plot recap – AVOID AT ALL COSTS: “Lennie ran off by himself and began crying after George took the dead mouse from him.” • Evidence from the text – DO THIS: “Lennie’s childishness is a trait that shows up often in Chapter 1. He has to ask George to remind him about the incident in Weed, and he becomes frightened when he thinks he has lost his work card.” another spectacular MOIO presentation

  8. Academic Expression • The fastest way to achieve in my class is by expressing yourself academically. • Remember to completely and directly address the prompt. • Remember to use evidence from the text to support your answers. another spectacular MOIO presentation

  9. Now, it’s time to . . . PRACTICE! another spectacular MOIO presentation
