  2. history Gideon Welles School opened in August 1967 as Gideon Welles Junior High School. It is named after Gideon Welles who was instrumental during the later 1800’s and served as President Abraham Lincoln and President Andrew Johnson’s Secretary of the Navy. Gideon Welles was born in Glastonbury, CT on July 1, 1802 and died in Hartford, CT February 11, 1878. He was active in Connecticut serving as a lawyer, Legislator, State Comptroller, Editor of the Hartford Times, and Hartford Postmaster. He is regarded as “the father of the modern Navy” Gideon Welles

The River, Gideon Welles, and 6th Grade Hoe the River Relates to Us: Downstream – future direction life headed Upstream – the past Rowing - working alone to meet goals Paddling – working as a team to make life go somewhere Whirlpool - when life seems to be spinning rapidly • Natural Resource – critical for life and sustaining cycles • Water - Must be treated with caring, respect and responsibility • Eddy- still calm part of life • Current – everyday flow – the way your life’s path takes you • Rapids – turbulent, stressful • Hidden Boulders/Rocks – sudden surprises good or bad that make you alter course

  19. Binder Organization To keep a clean binder all you need to do is: Have a section for each subject Have a pouch for all pencils Don’t just jam papers into it Clean it out when you need to Tip: Always have some white-lined paper handy, you run out really fast!

  20. Locker Organization To keep a neat locker all you need to do is: keep textbooks up on the shelf keep coat and backpack on the hooks keep stray papers out There is a place for everything!

  21. Book Organization To keep books from tumbling: Carry one book at a time and get others when needed Carry all the heavy booksat the bottom of the stack
