Frankish Empire • By 500 AD, wars and invasions had destroyed the remainder of the Roman Empire. • The Middle Ages emerged as a transitional period between ancient and modern times. • During the 400s, the Franks, who settled in present-day France & Germany, emerged as the strongest power. • Their early rulers, known as Merovingian kings (for the ruler Merowig) held power until the 700s. • To learn more about the Frankish Empire, you are going to do a jigsaw reading activity.

  4. Frankish Empire Jigsaw Read • You will work with one other person. Decide who will be #1 and #2. • To begin, each member will read their portions independently and take four notes for each section. • Your notes should encompass the MAIN ideas, themes, people, and terms. • Once you are finished, meet with your partner and share information. • You will act as the “teacher” of this content, so make sure you pay attention and understand! • #1 – Merovingian Rulers & Charlemagne’s Realm • #2 – A Christian Empire & Invasions

  5. Coat of Arms Activity In Medieval Europe, Knights were warriors or soldiers that helped protect the king and nobles. They wore heavy armor for protection and identified themselves with a coat of arms. Coat of arms were individual designs painted on their shields that had relation to their family and heritage. Nobles also used these to identify their family. For this activity, you are going to create your own coat of arms.

Personal Coat of Arms • For your coat of arms, I want you to create something that identifies your family, personality, hobbies, beliefs, etc. • There are no specific guidelines, but I want you to get into it! Be creative, expressive and unique! • On the back, you must write a one paragraph explanation of your coat of arms. • You will be graded on: • Creativity • Color • Description
